In this book full of examples, stories and case studies, Susan introduces her model of the Five Levels of Influence to assist leaders and aspiring leaders at all levels to identify and understand the difference between temporary and sustainable influence.
In recent Gallup research in North America they found that
- 31% of employees are fully engaged
- 52% are not engaged
- 17% are actively disengaged
In Europe the numbers are much worse with 90% of employees being ‘not engaged’ or ‘actively disengaged’. This research was completed before the COVID-19 Pandemic and the assumption is that the percentages of employees being actively engaged has probably decreased as employees work remotely from home with many more distractions.
If a leader has to prod their team to go to the next step, even if the team is “motivated”, the responsibility still sits squarely on the shoulders of the leader, who can end up becoming a micro-manager and eventually burning out.
The 5 levels of influence: Compliance, Participation, Buy-in, Leadership, Visionary, show leaders how to find out at what level they are operating, as a leader/influencer. When working with their teams above the “Mission – Critical line”, people become more fully engaged in creating success. But how can you get there?
When leaders share, whether verbally, digitally, or visually, WHO they are and WHY they are engaged, through sharing their personal experiences. The space opens for everyone to participate. By decoding HOW to do this and demonstrating WHY it is ever more important, leaders will elevate their messages and maximize their ‘Return on Influence’.
"Susan's book is a must-read for anyone in a leadership role: even if you already see yourself as a strong influencer, you'll benefit from her vast insight and experience. Her practical framework is a revelation which will make a profound difference to you, your team and your business."
